We will soon be launching our consultation services. The basic idea is that those who want to travel or volunteer on the African continent often need information about doing so. Information can be found all over the internet but we aim to provide information based on first-hand experiences. Also, we will do our best to show you how you can travel ethically and safely. There are some “voluntourism” companies out there that we think you should avoid, and there are those more ethical organizations that we would steer you towards.
If doing things independently is more your slant, we can help you with that! Our advisors will be speaking from personal experience so you’ll know whether or not that market is a good place to visit during the weekend or which corner of main street you’re most likely to catch public transit.
CALL OUT to advisors: If you’ve traveled and/or volunteered extensively in an African country and would like to help out your fellow travel-hungry backpackers, please drop us a note (contact@projectafri.ca) and we will be in contact.
Rotary Club of St. Albert,
I would like to thank you for your kind donation and support of our Ghana Medical Help project. The project is dependent on donations for its proper operation and with such generous support we are able to make a lasting impact. The funds from your club went towards the purchase of specialized pediatric medical equipment. This equipment is scarce in Ghana, and can often be difficult and expensive to acquire even here at home. The equipment that you have helped us provide to the 5 rural hospitals of the Upper East Region in Ghana will increase accuracy of medical diagnosis, increase doctor efficiency and decrease waiting times. These measures taken together mean lives will be saved. It’s truly amazing what can be accomplished through co-operation and determination.
Again, I would like to thank you for your kind support,
Michael Martyna
ProjectAfri.ca - Executive Director
This is the first post of a new a revitalized ProjectAfrica. As a person, I have grown immensely since the inception of this idea. And with the personal growth, as the director, my ideas of how the organization should operate have also change. Dramatically. Initially I thought, why not start an organization whose mandate it is to improve the lives of Africans living in poverty. And why not do it by selecting a single project and focusing a directed effort to said project, usually once a year. That worked well and served the projects well that were spotlighted but this summer I had much time afforded to me for critical inspection of the ideas. Who was benefitting from the existence of ProjectAfrica? I benefitted greatly in a social aspect, people thought I was in charge of something great. Humans desire to feel appreciated but for me the appreciation is only warranted if it is deserved, and with this overhall of the vision of ProjectAfrica, I hope to feel it is very much deserved.
Projects
Multiple projects by many in-country agencies will be placed on the website. Many of these organizations have been personally visited by the director. The organizations are selected based on the following critearia
1 - Display a need for funds
2 - Budgeting shows that micro donations ($5, $20, $200) will have a considerable impact on day-to-day operations
3 - Organization must display a vision for sustainability in the future
4 - 100% of funds must go towards project growth, that means 0% towards salaries or office expenses
All funds contributed through ProjectAfrica will go directly to the organization selected by the donor. Our promise is that zero dollars of donated money will be used for our operations.
More details on our expanded services to come.
